Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude

Created by Joël P. Wiesen, this mechanical comprehension test is distributed by several publishers, such as Criteria Corp. and Ramsay Corporation. It is considered to be one of the most reliable mechanical aptitude tests, along with the BMCT and MAT exams.

Overview of the WMTA

The WTMA Structure

The Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude consists of 60 multiple-choice questions to be completed within a 30-minute time limit. Each exercise consists of a simple black and white illustration, a related question and 3 possible answers (A, B and C). The questions are suited to a basic reading level (6th grade) and involve familiar situations and objects. Previous mechanical knowledge is not required. The questions deal with topics such as function, size, shape, weight and appearance of common tools and devices.

• Gravity/centre of gravity
• Thermal conduction
• Basics of electricity/electronics
• Basic physical properties of materials

Level of Difficulty

As explained above, the Wiesen Mechanical test does not assess the candidate's mechanical knowledge but rather learning potential. This test requires certain logic and a general understanding of the basic mechanical and physical laws.

How Are the Test Results Presented?

Results of the Wiesen Mechanical Comprehension Test are presented in a complete profile report, including the number of correct answers (unlike the BMCT) and the candidate’s ranking compared to all other examinees (in percentages).

The report also includes suitability rankings for various roles, as per each testing service provider (e.g. Criteria Corp.) Finally, the candidate’s raw score in each category is rated, indicating whether he/she has the required score for the position in question.
